Lacey Observes Stormwater Awareness Week: October 6-11

The City of Lacey (City) invites community members to take part in Stormwater Awareness Week from October 6-11. This annual week highlights the importance of keeping rainwater clean as it flows over streets, sidewalks, and driveways into local lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

What is Stormwater?

Stormwater is the rain and runoff that flows over streets, parking lots, and any hard surfaces. Along the way, it can pick up pollutants such as oil, fertilizers, soap, and pet waste, carrying them directly into local waterways. By making small changes at home and in daily routines, our community can help reduce pollution and keep our waterways healthy.

How You Can Help

Simple actions community members can take to protect waterways include:

  • Adopting a storm drain and keeping it clear of debris.
  • Picking up after pets.
  • Installing a rain barrel to reduce runoff and water your gardens.
  • Properly disposing of paint, oil, and yard waste.
  • Using less fertilizer and planting native plants.

Community members are encouraged to take part in the Adopt-a-Drain program launching later this fall. The program invites community members to adopt a storm drain near their home and keep it clear to reduce pollution, protect wildlife, and prevent flooding.
