LaceyLife November 2024

We Want to Hear From YOU!

Community input is essential to the success of the City’s programs and services. We encourage community members to engage with their local government in several ways, such as applying for advisory boards, attending public meetings (in person or online),
completing surveys, and more.

Currently, we’re gathering feedback on a range of important topics and we invite you to participate.

1 – Help Create a Vision for Lacey’s Future

The City is in the process of updating our Comprehensive Plan (Plan). This Plan guides the City’s decisions on local policy, planning, and capital facility investments over the next 20 years. It acts as a blueprint for development in the City; impacting neighborhoods, businesses, traffic, public facilities, services, the environment, and you.

The Plan also reflects the vision and priorities of Lacey community members while meeting state and federal requirements. Over the next several months, the City invites you to take the Comprehensive Plan Survey to share your ideas.

2 – What Housing Types Should Lacey Allow?

Due to changes in state regulations, the City must adopt a minimum of six different middle housing options. Middle housing includes a range of housing types that fit between single-family homes and large apartment buildings, offers people different living options, and helps make neighborhoods more diverse.

Currently, Lacey is seeing more duplexes, triplexes, and townhouses in residential areas, but we want your opinion! What kinds of housing would you like to see in Lacey neighborhoods? We want to make sure new housing fits the needs of the community while keeping the character of each neighborhood. By sharing your thoughts, you help us make decisions that support the City’s growth and local housing needs.

Take the Middle Housing Survey through November 30.

3 – Human Needs Survey EXTENDED! Now Available in Spanish and Korean

To allow for more community input and to reach a more diverse audience, we’ve extended our Human Needs Survey through November 8 and made it available in Spanish and Korean.

You still have time to help:
• Shape the City’s priorities for human services funding.
• Create a strategic plan for human services in Lacey.

NEW! Lacey Holiday Lights Replaces Lighted Parade and You’re Invited to Participate!

Each year we kick off the holiday season by lighting up Huntamer Park in a big way! This year, instead of the Lighted Parade, we plan to surround the park with decorated vehicles during the lighting event on Monday, December 2 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. This will allow more time for you to enjoy the beautiful displays and interact the community!

We invite businesses, clubs, organizations, and individuals to decorate their vehicles with lights and more to join in on the fun! We’ll even have awards. We also have opportunities to host activity booths and take part in the event as a food vendor.

To participate, visit the Lacey Parks Holiday Lights event page to learn more and apply by November 15.
Spaces is limited — so don’t wait. It’s sure to be a fun and festive evening!

2025 Proposed Budget: Community Projects & More Input Opportunities

After months of hard work, the Proposed 2025 Budget (Budget) is balanced and complete. It provides detailed information on revenues the City expects for the year, where the money comes from, and how we plan to use it in the most cost-effective manner.

The Budget includes several projects that focus on the City Council’s Workplan priorities that provide for a safe, vibrant, engaged community with quality transportation and infrastructure, excellent programs and services, and coordinated planning.

In addition to a full program of utility and road infrastructure improvements, here are two community projects found in the Budget.

As the Food Truck Depot continues to attract interest for hosting community events and local food trucks, the City is working to improve the site and access for community members.

The City allocates funds to support Lacey MakerSpace operations, ensuring it remains a valuable community asset.

As we near the end of the budget process, we invite public feedback at the remaining Budget Public Hearings listed in the yellow box. The hearings take place during the City Council meetings that begin at 6 p.m. The City Council plans to adopt the Final 2025 Budget at the Tuesday, December 17 meeting.

City Adopts DEIB Strategic Plan to Guide its Equity Efforts in Our Community

Following a 3+ year process, including significant community input and hours of hard work by our Commission on Equity, the City Council adopted the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Strategic Plan (Plan) during their September 17 meeting.

The Plan is a strategic guide for how the City plans to support equity efforts in the greater Lacey community from 2024 to 2-30. It identifies ways the City can work with community partners to build a more equitable and welcoming place where diversity is celebrated, opportunities are equitable, and barriers to participation are eliminated.

Get Ready for Winter Weather: Prepare NOW!

Snow, ice, and extreme weather can make it hard to get around. With a little preparation before the cold weather hits, we can all stay safer on the roads. To reduce the risks of winter driving:
• Winterize your vehicle to help ensure
it’s safe to drive during bad weather.
• Check current road conditions and weather
forecast before beginning your trip.
• Follow safe, winter-driving tips, including allowing extra time to get to your destination.

What to Expect from the City During a Winter Storm
During a snowstorm, our crews work hard to clear and maintain priority routes for emergency vehicles. Once priority routes are cleared, our crews begin working on secondary routes to provide better access for transit, schools, and commuters. If snowfall continues, priority routes may require repeated plowing, which may delay secondary route clearing.

Will My Neighborhood Streets Get Plowed?
The City does not have the resources to plow neighborhood streets. Homeowners Associations (HOAs) can visit the website listed below or scan the QR code to learn about our HOA Snow Plowing Policy.
