Why do we love Lacey: More Than Just a “Pass Through” City!

We thought we’d have a bit of fun with the recent column featured in the JOLT under the section “Making Sense of Olympia Lacey.” While we appreciate the kudos from David Scherer Water, their description of the City’s history, while a fun alternative, is not entirely accurate (more on that later). But it gives us the perfect opportunity to write 10 reasons we L-O-V-E Lacey and believe it is worth a “stop” or a “stay.” Check back here often; we’ll add another reason to love Lacey every few days.

1. It’s the PEOPLE!

Lacey’s greatest asset – the people.

Our community is full of people who show up, support each other, and take pride in creating a friendly, vibrant, and inclusive city. Whether volunteering at a community event, sharing a new idea, or lending a helping hand when someone’s in need, Lacey’s community members bring heart to everything they do. The connection and shared purpose make Lacey a great place to work, play, or stay.

???????????? ????????????????????????????????????’???? ???????????????????????????????????? brings incredible energy, culture, and fresh perspectives to almost every part of Lacey. You’ll find it reflected in our schools, community events, local businesses, and City organization. In Lacey, everyone belongs.

For us, ????????’???? ???????????? ????????????????????????.

2. Simply the best: No Park System like Lacey’s

We’re also lucky to have one of the best municipal park systems in Washington State. With over 1,200 acres of parkland and open space, miles of ADA-accessible paved trails, five beautiful lakes, several community buildings, and the Regional Athletic Complex – one of the premier outdoor sporting venues in the state – there’s no shortage of places to explore and enjoy the outdoors.

If you’re looking for walking, biking, or rolling trails – we got ‘em. Sports fields, such as soccer, rugby, baseball, and softball – we’ve got those, too! If you’re more into racket sports – pickleball and tennis – guess what? We have that, too! Volleyball, disc golf, skate park – you bet!

And, coming soon, Greg Cuoio Park – a 500+ acre gem – will be the go-to spot for outdoor recreation! With Phase 1a just underway, the region’s in for a treat later this year.

3. Putting the Unity in CommUNITY!

Did we mention that Lacey knows how to put on amazing community events that honor diverse cultures, celebrate community spirit, and bring people together? Yes, we do! From the community-favorite Lacey Spring Fun Fair to Children’s Day to the all-inclusive Cultural Celebration and everything in between. You might want to check out our event calendar – there’s truly something for everyone!

And let’s not forget that Huntamer Park comes alive throughout the summer with free entertainment galore! Live music, magic shows, and more! It’s definitely THE place to be!

4.  Small Businesses are our Jam – and we do like Jam.

A large dog sits on gravel holding a black shopping bag by its handles in its mouth at an outdoor market with stalls and people in the background.

Lacey loves supporting our small business entrepreneurs—and we don’t just say it, we live it! In 2021, Lacey was ranked the top small city in Washington state to start a business, placing it 138th out of 1,300 U.S. cities evaluated. Saying it again for those in the back, Lacey was #1 for starting a business in the Evergreen State. Lacey earned this distinction based on its business-friendly environment, access to resources, and business costs. We also have a growing economy, close proximity to major markets, relatively lower cost of living, and an A+ quality of life.

The Thurston EDC and the Center for Business and Innovation are in the heart of MidTown, providing support, training, and expertise — whether you are an entrepreneurial startup, scaling up, or an established business, the resources are here for you.

Want to explore several small businesses in one spot? Check out the Lacey Night Market! Every other Friday from April through October, Lacey Depot Park transforms into a lively hub of local vendors, artisans, food trucks, and more—setting the perfect vibe to kick off your weekend!

Speaking of the Lacey Depot, did you know it was created to help start-up businesses? Four of the six (67%) food truck entrepreneurs are first-time business owners, and several are minority- or women-owned. Don’t just stand there—get some food and thank us later!

5. Keeping things safe and “Classy”

Not to brag (well, maybe just a little), but the Lacey Police Department (LPD) is the only nationally accredited police department in Thurston County. That’s actually a pretty big deal and it reflects their commitment to doing things the right way.

Five uniformed police officers pose and smile in an office; one seated officer holds a colorful fluffy pen. Computer monitors and a flag are visible in the background.

With a strong focus on community connection, LPD believes public safety begins with trust, effective communication, and collaboration. They work hand-in-hand with community members to keep our city safe, prioritizing education, prevention, and support first. The results of this community-oriented service speaks for themselves, with crime trending down and good vibes trending up.

Our community’s Blaze Busters are the best of the best. Lacey Fire District 3 (LFD3), a stalwart of the greater Lacey area for the past 75 years, is the definition of community-focused, providing education and fire prevention programs. LFD3’s highly trained staff is known for their quick response times and ability to manage high-stress situations the opposite of fire – as cool as cucumbers.

In Lacey, our teams put the public first in public safety with a people-first approach. And it’s one more reason we’re proud to call Lacey home.

6. Traveling around here is smoother than your favorite playlist

While driving around Lacey, take note of the roads—not just where you’re going but how well they’re maintained. Our streets are your hubcap’s heaven—we keep wheels where they belong.

In 2023, 96.4% of Lacey’s roadway centerline miles were rated as “good” or “very good” condition. By comparison, 91% of roads statewide are in “fair or better” condition. So, you could say our roads are literally some of the best in the state! Top of the class.

If you prefer a more active mode of transportation, pedaling and rolling around Lacey is quite easy. Hop on your bike, skateboard, or in your wheelchair and hit the Chehalis-Western Trail or the Karen Fraser -Woodland Trail to get to shopping, eating, parks, and more. You might even see a friend or two along the way!  All of Thurston County is a  ride away from Lacey.

Did you know we have a robust public transit system where everyone rides free? Yes, free! And, exciting news … Later this year, Intercity Transit expects delivery of their first fuel-cell electric buses. They also anticipate grant awards for battery-electric vehicles and charging stations for bus and Dial-A-Lift services.

Get on board and take a relaxing, easy trek south to Portland, north to the airport, or Seattle and beyond! Amtrak runs right along Lacey city limits, making it easy to skip the I-5 gridlock.

So, however you like to get around … Lacey has the hook up!

7. Brain gain: We’ve Got Some Top-Notch Schools

Looking for an education? From kindergarten to college, Lacey’s got plenty of options!

North Thurston Public Schools serves a diverse student body with a wide range of programs—including traditional and alternative learning pathways—designed to support every student’s success, no matter their learning style.

Lacey is also home to several private schools, including Pope John Paul II High School, which is ranked the best private high school in Thurston County (source: Niche).

When it comes to higher education, you don’t have to go far. The South Puget Sound Community College Lacey campus and Saint Martin’s University offer excellent opportunities for students pursuing degrees, certifications, or professional development—all right here in, you guessed it, Lacey.

Did we mention we have an emerging innovation hub? Brace yourself, the future is here!  South Puget Sound Community College, Saint Martin’s University, the Lacey Maker Space and the Thurston EDC Center for Business Innovation are a 15-minute walk apart within Midtown.  Where you can Live, Learn, Earn and Create.

8. We’re the VIP spot of Western Washington – in the center of it all

Map of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho highlighting major cities, highways, and landmarks; a red heart is placed near Olympia, Washington.

Even though Lacey is the largest city in Thurston County, we still love our small-city charm—and we think you will, too! But if you’re craving a bit more hustle and bustle, no problem. With easy access to I-5, you can hop on the freeway to your favorite big city (like Seattle or Portland), then head back home to the comfort and calm of Lacey. It’s really the best of both worlds.

While Lacey is home to variety of parks, lakes, and nature reserves – some bigger parks are really close by, including Olympic National Park, Rainier National Park, and the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. These wonderful places provide plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, birdwatching, and water sports.

9. What time is it? Creativity o’clock!

Ever feel a spark of creativity but don’t have the right tools to bring your ideas to life? Lacey’s got you covered. The award-winning Lacey MakerSpace is an innovator’s workshop (or heaven!) and it’s open to the public.

From high-tech fabrication tools like 3D printers and laser cutters to hands-on classes in everything from woodworking to robotics—it’s a space where anyone and everyone can create their very own masterpiece.

Whether you’re looking to take a class, teach a class, or just dive into your next project, Lacey MakerSpace is the place to make it happen.

10. We’ve got options: Small-town vibe, big-time amenities

Year after year, Lacey lands on some prominent lists. Lacey has been ranked the second-best place to live in Washington State, the 75th best place to live in the United States, Best Places to Live for Families, Most “green” cities in America … The list goes on and on. Not bad for just a “pass through” community!

And pass through this – with over 60,000 residents, Lacey is now Thurston County’s biggest city! Why have we grown so much? Well, options. In addition to strong and active neighborhoods, our residents find something that works for them: single-family homes, duplexes, townhomes, multi-family, apartments, etc., and more units coming soon, including new housing at Woodland Square Loop, Williams Crossing, and Morel Meadows.

We also have a diverse range of commercial areas within easy reach of neighborhoods, such as the Midtown District, Hawks Prairie, and Corporate Center.
